Two companies whose businesses have been shaken by the pandemic have hired new marketers as they head into what is expected to be a busy 2022. Victoria Vaynberg has left Resy to join the Zola wedding platform as CMO, while Melissa Weiss, previously a marketing consultant, will lead marketing at luggage company Away.
- Former Zola Marketing Director Mike Chi left the company earlier this year to join the Hims & Hers telehealth brand. Former Away marketing manager Selena Kalvaria joined Gucci this summer.
Go back: Away and Zola both had a pretty rough 2020 as travel and weddings weren’t really a thing. At the start of the pandemic, Away saw his 90% drop in sales. And Zola leaves 20% of its workforce go last April, reducing the salaries of the remaining employees.
But things are improving: Dust off your cocktail dress – there will be nearly 2.5 million weddings in the United States next year, per research of the marriage report. The country has not seen as many marriages since 1984, according to Axes. And the trip has bounced all year.
Now the two companies seem to have their marketing ducks in a row with their latest hires. This week, Away co-founder and CEO Jen Rubio told the the Wall Street newspaper the brand has “set aggressive growth targets for the business, which include a strong focus on our branding strategy” for the next year and beyond. And Vaynberg said in a statement that she is joining Zola at a time when her tools, which include websites and marriage records, “will support more couples and sellers than ever before.”-MRS
