Travelers on part of I-65 in northern Alabama should expect slowdowns this week.
The Alabama Department of Transportation said inspections were taking place this week at Tennessee River bridges on I-65. A single-lane closure on the southbound bridge will begin Monday and last through Thursday from 8 a.m. to approximately 3:30 p.m. daily. There will be no lane closures on Friday, April 15 or on weekends.
ALDOT said travelers should expect “significant delays” on I-65 south of Athens and delays on connecting routes as well, including parts of I-565, the Alabama 20 and US 31 in southern Limestone County.
The work is being carried out by a consultant specializing in bridge analysis in view of a major rehabilitation project which should begin in 2023.
If the inspection of the southbound bridge is completed this week, work on the northbound bridge will begin the following week. Expect lane closures on northbound I-65 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, Monday, April 18 through Thursday, April 21. No lane closures are scheduled for the last week of April, although additional lane closures are required for at least two weeks in May to complete the northbound inspection.
Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, use alternative routes where possible and check traffic conditions via ALGOtraffic.com or the ALGO Traffic app before setting off. Billboards will be positioned on I-65 to alert motorists of the lane closure and potential alternate routes.
