Eid Al Adha: Residents of the United Arab Emirates prefer visas over arrival destinations for holidays

Dubai: Many UAE residents plan their vacation destinations around places where they can obtain a visa on arrival or apply for an e-visa. According to travel agents in the UAE, there are no Schengen visa appointments available for the near time, prompting UAE travelers to seek vacation spots where visas are easy to obtain. “Albania, Georgia, Kenya and Israel are among the top destinations for UAE residents to travel to this Eid Al Adha,” said Piljo Paul, senior consultant at AFC Holidays.

Paul added that e-visa fees can be as low as $6 or around Dh22 (for Armenia) for UAE residents. The e-visa fee for Kenya is around $50. Essentially, for little money and hardly any elaborate effort to apply for a visa, there are a number of places that offer attractive vacation destinations for UAE residents.

Sophia Tamang, Dubai Tourism Strategy Consultant, said: “For Emirati travellers, Zakopane in Poland is all the rage. Zakopane is a city located in the very south of Poland, right at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. It is very scenic and beautiful. There are a number of beautiful chalets here which are attractive. Poland allows visas on arrival for Emiratis, so it’s convenient. Many families go there for the summer. Bosnia and Herzegovina are two other attractive destinations for Emiratis due to easy access to halal food and scenic beauty.

Tamang said expatriate Arabs were heading to Trabzon and Istanbul in Turkey. “They are also heading towards Azerbaijan. Other expatriates like Indians and Filipinos travel to Georgia, Azerbaijan, Bali, Seychelles, Maldives, Mauritius for visa ease,” she said.

Sri Lankan expat Sanath K. said he and his family will be traveling to Kenya for the summer holidays. “There are amazing deals doing the rounds. We take advantage of it. Unfortunately, I wanted to take my family to Switzerland, but it was not possible. We did not have an appointment for the Schengen visa. I really hope the backlog will be cleared for many of us who want to restart our vacations in Europe.

Priyadarshee Panigrahi, a Dubai resident and business management professional, was lucky. He and his family have a valid Schengen visa which is about to expire and so they are traveling to Switzerland for Eid Al Adha. “We just got lucky. Our Schengen visa will be valid until just after Eid Al Adha. Otherwise, we simply would not have been able to travel to our favorite destination in the world.

“Part of our family is based near Zurich and we haven’t seen them for more than three years, mainly because of the pandemic. Besides the strong desire to meet them, the presence of valid Schengen visas on our passports made our choice of destination quite easy. Our kids are very excited as they might see their cousins in person after a long time. Although we have been to Switzerland many times, ours is an outdoor family and we plan to do some hikes on the many beautiful hiking trails that Switzerland offers, such hikes are really refreshing and invigorating.

Dubai residents Christopher Aryris and Rebecca Malhotra

British expat Christopher Ayris and his friend Rebecca Malhotra travel to Austria and Prague and they too are in luck. Indeed, for Christopher, a visa is not required in advance for these two countries. As for Rebecca, she has a valid Schengen visa.

The couple booked their vacation well in advance. “We knew that this year during the summer Europe would be busy and expensive. That’s why we started planning in late April and early May for the Eid Al Adha break.
