Interstate travel to Australia: what you need to know

Travel between Australian states is trickier than usual this holiday season. Here’s our guide to help you navigate it.

Shipping between Australian states has become a minefield over the past couple of years, and with different rules for each location, things can get confusing.

Dramatic border changes have taken place in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland in recent weeks, allowing residents to travel back and forth.

But some Australian states that remain relatively Covid-free, like Western Australia and Tasmania, still have strict border conditions in place.

TRAVEL TO VICTORIA

People from all over Australia can visit Victoria at any time.

No permit is required, nor a vaccination certificate.

Due to Victoria’s hotspot status and the high number of daily Covid cases, residents who travel there may not be able to return to their home country depending on their home country.

TRAVEL IN NSW

Victoria Travelersaged 16 and over who are not fully immunized cannot travel to NSW for vacation or leisure. Anyone who has visited a ‘close contact’ exposure site cannot enter New South Wales within 14 days of visiting the site or within seven days if fully vaccinated.

ACT people who have visited a ‘close contact’ exhibition site cannot enter New South Wales within 14 days of the site visit or within seven days if they are fully vaccinated.

Anyone who has visited an ‘occasional contact’ exhibition site cannot enter New South Wales unless they have a negative Covid test result since their on-site visit.

Travelers from South Australia, WA, Tasmania, Queensland and Northern Territory can travel freely within the state without a permit.

TRAVEL TO QUEENSLAND

Victorians and residents of New South Wales traveling in Queensland must have an entry permit and show a negative Covid test within 72 hours of entry. They must also take a Covid test five days after their arrival.

People fully vaccinated a week before entering Queensland can enter the state by road or by plane.

There is no quarantine requirement.

WA and Tasmania travelers who have not been in a hotspot in the last 14 days need an entry permit to enter the state, but there is no requirement to be vaccinated.

Travelers from HER require an entry permit to enter Queensland, and those who are fully vaccinated a week before entering the state can enter by road or air.

Although there are no quarantine requirements, visitors must undergo a Covid test five days after arrival.

Persons entering the State of Greater Adelaidesince November 28 can not enter without quarantine.

Although there is no quarantine requirement for travelers from the ACT, they will need an entry permit to enter.

People must present a negative Covid test taken within 72 hours of entry and must have a Covid test five days after arrival.

NT travelersdo not require an entry permit and there are no restrictions.

People who have been to Katherine and Robinson River in the previous 14 days cannot enter Queensland unless they are a resident, are moving or have an exemption (around 40 14 days is then required).

Travelers from all other parts of the NT can enter without the need for vaccination.

TRAVEL TO WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Starting in late January or early February, WA plans to accept all interstate travelers who are fully vaccinated and have a negative Covid test taken within 72 hours of entry.

Until then, the only Victorians allowed in are government officials and essential workers with entry permits. Even compassionate reasons won’t get people into the state.

Travelers from NSW, ACT and SA will need an entry permit to enter the state, but only approved travelers – which do not include tourists – are allowed to enter.

Residents of WA returning home can obtain approval.

Travelers from Queensland and Tasmania require an entry permit and must pass a health examination on arrival. Travelers do not need to be vaccinated or quarantined.

NT travelers must have an entry permit, be fully vaccinated and undergo a health check on arrival.

They must also perform a 14-day home quarantine and pass a Covid test within 48 hours of arrival and on day 12.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA TRIP

All persons planning to travel to South Africa from overseas and abroad, including returning South Australians, should apply through EntryCheck SA.

A person is prohibited from entering South Africa if they are in close contact with a positive interstate Covid-19 case.

Travelers from Victoria, ACT and NSW need an entry permit, must be fully vaccinated and present a negative Covid test prior to entry. Travelers from these jurisdictions no longer have to undergo a Covid test upon arrival in the state, unless they are symptomatic.

Travelers from Queensland, Washington State and Tasmania require an entry permit and must be fully vaccinated.

Travelers to the NT, with the exception of the Katherine area, must be fully immunized and have a permit.

Travelers who visited Katherine remain under severe restrictions if they want to enter the state.

TRAVEL TO TASMANIA

All travelers to Tasmania, including returning residents, must provide their contact details and travel details before entering the state on the Tas e-Travel system.

Travelers from Victoria, ACT and NSW must be fully vaccinated and present a negative Covid test carried out within 72 hours of departure.

Those who travel from Queensland, NT, SA and WA must be fully vaccinated.

Unvaccinated travelers must request approval before traveling.

TRAVEL TOWARDS THE ACT

Travelers from Victoria and NSW must have an entry permit.

Unvaccinated travelers from metropolitan areas, any regional hotspot areas, or those who have been at an exhibition site must remain in lockdown conditions for 14 days.

queensland travelers do not need an entry permit unless they have been at an exhibition site.

No permit is required and there are no restrictions for travelers from WA, NT, Tasmania or SA.

Travelers from Victoria and NSW must have an entry permit.

TRIP TO THE NORTHERN TERRITORY

Travelers from all states will need an entry permit, must be fully vaccinated, present a negative Covid test 72 hours before entry, have a Covid test within 72 hours of entry as well as six days later and must remain in the Grand Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs in the first 14 days of entry.

Travelers should also use a government monitoring app that tracks your location.
