The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has started erecting avalanche protection structures from Palchan to the south portal of the Atal tunnel in Dhundhi on the Manali-Leh highway to ensure the safety of commuters during the winter. Sources say the BRO is erecting 16 layers of snow avalanche protection structures, which will minimize the threat. It is building three snow galleries and a viaduct to ensure the safety of vehicle movements. The tunnel has become a big tourist attraction and witnesses a huge influx of visitors.

Due to the high altitude, the area receives heavy snowfall in winter, making the trip risky. Thus, the BRO decided to erect permanent structures for protection against avalanches. The structures are being built with the help of the Defense Geoinformatics Research Center (DGRE), which provides the armed forces with cutting-edge intelligent terrain solutions.

The Manali-Leh highway is strategically important, as it allows the army easy access to Ladakh.
